Looks like a mix between ET (remember that movie) and that other movie where the robot comes alive (I don't remember the name, but he kept saying 'number 5 is alive'). Both of these movies are straight out of the 80's when I was a little kid so this PC captures that for me (ok, I know your article said the 50's but I wasn't around then, so I have no personal experience!!!). I wonder what a machine like this would cost? Looks great!
